In its 2026/1 issue the Belgian legal journal on Copyright and Media Law, Auteurs & Media, publishes a series of contributions based on the presentations during the 5 May 2025 conference on Law and Humor. The focus is on freedom of expression and restrictions in relation to hate speech, racism, religion and advertising, including in an online context, with concluding remarks and recommendations by prof. François Jongen.

The articles are in Dutch and French, apart from the contribution in English by Alberto Godioli “Humour, Freedom of Expression and the Value of Interdisciplinarity” (p. 21-32). Godioli explains how a more systematic approach to the subjectivity of humour, based on findings by interdisplinary research on humour “can pave the way to concrete improvements in court practice”.
Our contribution introduces different aspects of the relation between law and humour from the perspective of (limitations on) the right to freedom of expression: Dirk Voorhoof, “Humor en recht, recht op humor en expressievrijheid” (p. 13-20)
