Sexual Misconduct in Academia and SLAPPs

We participated in a webinar on (the challenges of) reporting sexual harassment in academia. The report of the webinar finds that despite the empowering calls to ‘speak out’ and ‘break the silence’, victims often face severe backlash from institutions and perpetrators. The report also refers to abuse of law suits (SLAPPS) and other intimidating actions against academics, in particular in relation to signaling or revealing sexual misconduct at universities. The report is published under the title “North-South Feminist Dialogue. Silencing Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Academia and the Politics of Naming”, and is online available here: link .

An update on this issue is now also published as an article in Feminist Media Studies: Bull, A., Ahmadi, D., Dark, T., Petit-Thorne, A., & Voorhoof, D. (2025). Academic freedom in publishing on gender-based violence and harassment. Feminist Media Studies, 1–7, https://doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2025.2455933: Academic freedom in publishing on gender-based violence and harassment.
